LATEST COMMENTARY

What I am watching now.

Short-form analysis on the economic questions shaping policy, markets and public services.

MY TAKE · UK ECONOMY

Resilience is not momentum.

An economy can remain standing without moving forward. The policy challenge is to convert stability into productivity, investment and real-income growth — without losing fiscal credibility.

BIG IDEAS

The questions behind the headlines.

Four recurring themes connect my research, policy work and public commentary.

01

Growth & fiscal credibility

How can governments create room for investment when debt, yields and demographic pressures tighten the budget constraint?

02

Prevention as economic policy

Prevention changes future healthcare costs, labour-market participation and the sustainability of public finances.

03

Healthcare productivity

The central question is not simply how much we spend, but how technology, incentives and organisation convert spending into outcomes.

04

Europe’s competitiveness problem

Europe needs investment and reform while preserving social protection amid ageing, energy costs and geopolitical fragmentation.

POLICY IMPACT

Evidence that reaches decision-makers.

Research matters most when it remains useful outside the seminar room.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Expert testimony on tobacco taxation

Invited evidence to the Parliament’s FISC subcommittee during work on tobacco taxation and fiscal policy.

UNITED KINGDOM

Evidence used in parliamentary debate

Research referenced in debate around the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and the sustainability of the NHS.

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT

HABIT Expert Group
